Early Life

In 1978, as a student at Waukegan East High School, Neil along with partner Mike Shklair won an Illinois Individual Events championship for “Humorous Duet Acting.” In 1982, he graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois and then came to Chicago to continue a career in acting.
Flynn was the part of the nationally known Bradley University Speech Team and was a Sigma Nu there.

Works

In Chicago, Neil worked with Goodman and Steppenwolf Theatres. He was even nominated for Actor in a Principal Role, for Joseph Jefferson Award for his work in The Ballad of the Sad Café in 1986. He also performed with the Improv Olympic as well as for the Second City Comedy Troupe.

His role of Janitor in Scrubs has got him the maximum fame but he has done a lot of other work too.
The movies he worked in are: Major League (1989), Rookie of the Year (1993), The Fugitive (1993), Baby's Day Out (1994), Chain Reaction (1996), Home Alone 3 (1997), The Right Temptation (2000), Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (2000), Mean Girls ( He played the role of Chip Heron, the father of the leading lady) (2004), Anchorman (the scene was cut in the screen version of the film but can be seen in the DVD series and also in spin-off film Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie)(2004),Hoot (2006), Sex and Death 101 (2007) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) etc.

Most of his roles were related to that of police, law enforcement expert, bouncers, security man etc.

Scrubs

Flynn has auditioned for the character of Dr. Cox in the comedy drama, Scrubs but was chosen for the role of Janitor, which although was meant for only a single episode (The first episode "My First Day") but later gained such immense popularity that it became a full fledged main character, who has appeared on almost each episode of Scrubs till date. This character is also the only non medical professional lead character of the show.
The Janitor basically has some sort of dislike for the Dr. John "J.D" Dorian, who is the main protagonist of the show. Hence he plays some mean spirited pranks on him, every now and then. He even once, trips J.D. with a broom which leads to his termination as a janitor by the new chief of medicine.

Flynn is also active with the iO West, often performing in Mice, Shark, Beer. This group is one of the best long – form improvisational groups in the country and has been voted Improv Festival’s Ensemble of the Year. The cast has Pat Finn, Mike Coleman, Peter Hulne, Neil Flynn and David Keochner as members. The credit list is also varied and boasts of lost of impressive credits in How High, My Boys, Ed, Mean Girls, Thank You for Smoking, Scrubs, Anchorman, Seinfeld, American Body Shop, SNL and many other shows.
