Fact-o-File

  • The hospital name ‘Sacred Heart Hospital’ is inspired by the name of the school which Christa Miller, wife of the series creator Bills Lawrence attended.
  • Dr. John Michael "J.D." Dorian’s P.I.N. is 3674 and his social security number is 987-65-4320.
  • Jack, Dr. Cox's son, was born on March 21, 2003.
  • In the second season, a couple does the bungee jump for Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke. They had met for the first time on the sets, and soon, they were married.
  • In one of the episodes Zach Braff, by mistake refers to the Janitor as Neil Flynn; the actor’s actual name.
  • In the original series aired in English, the nurse Carla Espinosa converses with her mother in Spanish, but in the dubbed Spanish version of ‘Scrubs’ they are shown chatting in Italian.
  • The initial choice for the role of J.D. was actor Michael Muhney but he was not taken in as the crew felt that he did not matched up with the distinctness of the role.
  • Percival is Dr. Cox's first name but he prefers the name Perry.
  • There is Ted’s mother’s photograph often seen in his office. That picture is of real-life mother of the actor Sam Lloyd who characterizes the role of Ted.
  • The same set that was used as the Sacred Heart Hospital has been used in the 2002 movie Crossroads.
  • The distinct blue and yellow wristband worn by Dr. Cox is in the support of the National Down Syndrome Society's "Buddy Walk".
  • John Ritter playing the role of J.D.’s father was actually Zach Braff’s idea.
  • ‘Scrubs’ has some very interesting connections to the acronym TCW. JD goes out with a girl whose is called TCW (Tasty Coma Wife) and then in the particular episode ‘My No Good Reason’ as being from a school with the initials TCW. Donald Faison starred in Remember The Titans whose high school was TCW.
  • For the 2001 season finale teasers, the teasers for the show “24” were parodied. The show “24” and “Scrubs” shared the same time slot.
  • Dr. Cox often wears professional sports jerseys, including Chris Chelios and Jeremy Schockey; the two ‘bad guys’ of their respective sports.
  • A closed hospital in the San Fernando Valley in California, ‘North Hollywood Medical Center’ was leased by the network and renovated for the show. The upper and the lower floors of the Center were used as production offices and other sets.
  • All the plates on the wall are for the pets of the crew and cast of “Scrubs”.
  • A longer introduction of all the characters of the show, even other then the doctors, in the second season proved to be scuttled step as NBC extended the length of the episodes of the show to grab more viewer ship.
  • Most of the lead and recurring characters also participated in the show “Clone High” which featured in 2002. Bill Lawrence happened to be the executive producer of this too.
  • There are several episodes which have some form of the phrase "And there it is", mostly when the theme or moral of that particular episode is told. Although it is J.D.’s task to speak this line, at times other characters also deliver the line.
  • Many characters, like Snoop Dogg intern, Colonel Doctor, Dr. Beardface etc began working on the shows as extras and were called by these names by the crew and cast as their original names were unknown to them. Later these were written as characters in the episodes with speaking roles.
  • “Scrubs” was at first planned to be aired on ABC but after the network’s refusal NBC took up the series.
  • Ted’s “Band” is actually a group named “The Blanks” which the actor had created with his pals at college.
  • Dr. Cox has used only some names for the girls more the once, like Marcia, Lily, Ginger, Gidget, Toto Shirley, Gloria, Janice, Betsy, Carol, and Nancy. And once, even Brittany. When J.D. talks about this with the Doctor he says "Today I'm going with famous pop-stars."
  • The very usual Dr. Cox’s nose rub before crossing his arms is inspired from Robert Redford in the 1973 feature The Sting, where he uses this as an indication for “Go Ahead” or “It’s OK”. It is said that as homage to the film, John C. McGinley himself added this gesture.
  • Also, Dr. Cox’s habit of calling J.D. by girl’s names was taken by McGinley’s real life joke with his neighbor and close friend John Cusack.
  • It is claimed by the writers and Bill Lawrence that Neil Flynn who enacts the role of The Janitor that he never speaks out of the script, albeit this is said in light humor. Even there were rumors that the script of the fourth season contained the phrase "(Whatever Neil says)". This further testifies the actor’s versatility and spontaneity.
  • The final line of J.D.’s father, when he asks J.D. to pull his finger, saying “I pooed a little," was totally off the cuff and Zach Braff in order to stop himself from bursting into laughter had to bite the insides of his cheeks.
  • Each episode of Scrubs begins with the word "My..." with few exceptions like the episodes titled "His Story III", "Her Story II", ''His Story IV'', "Her Story", "His Story II" and His Story. It is also a notable fact that these episodes has internal narration by not J.D. but some other characters like The Janitor, Carla, Elliot, Turk, Dr Kelso and Dr. Cox. Another episode worth mentioning is “Their Story” where thoughts and voices of all the main and supporting characters of the show can be heard.
  • The creator of ‘Scrubs’, Bill Lawrence has mentioned in some interviews that he wanted “Scrubs” to be modeled like the “Simpsons” with the humor element and number of high-profile guests forming a huge number or recurring characters. In an episode aired in 2006, J.D. says that "Grey's Anatomy" was so realistic that "it's almost like someone was watching our lives and put it on television," a joke borrowed from an early '90s Simpsons episode saying the same of "Dinosaurs."
  • The medical advisors of the show as credited are Dr. Jon Turk, Dr Jonathan Dorian and Dr. Dolly Klock, which seems to have inspired the names of characters played by Donald Faison, Zach Braff and Heather Graham.
  • Creator Bill Lawrence and producer Randall Winston had also created and produced a show Spin City. Subsequently, many former members of the 1996 show appear on ‘Scrubs’ as guest stars. Notable amongst them are Alexander Chaplin, Barry Bostwick, Alan Ruck, Heather Locklear, Michael Boatman, Michael J. Fox and Richard Kind.
  • An experiment was carried out with Season Five Finale, the twenty – fourth episode “My Transition” was completed and broadcasted in High Definition thus achieving the distinction of becoming the first network show series to finish an on – line edit in Final Cut Pro SD, also becoming the first network show to on – line in HD in Final Cut Pro. Still, the show is produced in Standard Definition because according the show producer, Randall Winston "After a lot of teasing, yes, the HD was an experiment, for everyone really. We will not be doing any more HD - there is a cost that no one is interested in covering and there is debate, not among us here at the show, about how the quality stands up. I don't think that we can get the look that the show is designed around [by using] tape."
  • There was a sense of surety in minds of the crew and the cast and show including Bill Lawrence, the creator/writer of the show that the series would be cancelled by the end of the first season, hence a plot twist of conceived in case of a forced, sudden season finale. According to this plan, The Janitor would be shown as a complete fabrication of JD’s mind because it is a fact that the Janitor never spoke with anyone other then JD. This idea was well preserved up till the second season when there was a need for the Janitor to talk to some one else too.
  • The hospital where ‘Scrubs’ was shot, had offices for the producers and crew along with dressing rooms for the cast on the third floor. The pets of the staff were all welcome and stayed on the third floor. Now Donald Faison, playing the role of Dr. Turk is not very fond of dogs but was unhappy with dogs, dropping in front of his door. The truth how ever was that Robert Masicho who plays the character of “The Todd”, collected the dog’s “two-sies” and placed them in front ofDonald Faison’s dressing room door. This was revealed on the third season DVD features.
